Google truncates snippets based on pixel width, not character count. A title full of wide letters like 'W' and 'M' can exceed the ~600px limit in fewer than 60 characters, while narrow letters like 'i' and 'l' give you more room. Checking both gives you a more accurate picture.
Aim for 120–155 characters. Shorter descriptions may look thin to Google and miss click-through opportunities. Descriptions longer than ~155 characters (or ~920px wide) are commonly truncated in desktop search results with an ellipsis.
Truncation doesn't directly harm rankings, but it can hurt click-through rate. If the end of your description is cut off, searchers may miss your call to action. Google may also rewrite your snippet entirely if it considers your description a poor match for the query.
Google rewrites meta descriptions around 62% of the time, especially when it finds a passage on the page that better matches the search query. Writing a clear, keyword-rich description still helps — it's used when Google decides your text is the best match.
