A QR code can encode plain text, URLs, email addresses (mailto: links), phone numbers (tel: links), SMS messages, Wi-Fi network credentials, vCard contact information, and calendar events. URLs are the most common use case since they let you point a physical object to any online resource.
The QR code standard supports up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters at the lowest error-correction level. In practice, keeping your payload under 300 characters produces a less dense code that scans faster and more reliably from a distance.
For print use, download the highest resolution available and ensure the printed QR code is at least 2 cm x 2 cm (about 0.8 inches square). The larger the print size, the easier it is for phones to scan, especially in low-light environments.
Standard QR codes require sufficient contrast between the dark modules and the light background to scan reliably. You can use any dark colour for the modules against a white or light background. Avoid making the background dark and the modules light, as many scanner apps struggle with inverted QR codes.
