Even a perfect final (100%) would only give you 87.4%. The target is out of reach.

How It Works

Your course grade is a weighted average. If the final is worth W%, then:

Final Score Needed = (Desired − Current × (1 − W)) ÷ W

Example: current 82%, final worth 30%, target 90% → (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7% — not achievable. Try lowering the target to 87% → (87 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 98.7%.

FAQ
How is the needed final exam score calculated?+

The formula is: Needed Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. It works because your course grade is a weighted average of your current coursework and the final exam.

What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?+

That means it's mathematically impossible to reach your target with a standard exam. You would need to lower your desired grade or check whether your instructor offers extra credit.

What should I enter for 'current grade'?+

Enter the cumulative percentage grade you have earned in the course so far — before the final exam. This is typically displayed in your learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.).

Does this work if my final is worth more than 50% of the grade?+

Yes. Simply enter the exact weight — for example 50 for a 50% final. The formula works for any valid weight between 1% and 100%.
