How it works: Step length (one foot moving forward) is estimated as ~41–42% of your height, based on Tudor-Locke & Bassett pedometer calibration research. Distance = steps × step length. Results are estimates — actual step length varies with walking speed, terrain, and individual gait.

FAQ
How many miles is 10,000 steps?+

For an average adult around 5'9" (175 cm), 10,000 steps is approximately 4.5–4.7 miles (7.2–7.5 km). The exact distance depends on your height because taller people naturally have a longer step length.

How is step length calculated from height?+

Research by Tudor-Locke, Bassett, and ACSM shows that average walking step length is roughly 41–42% of a person's height. For example, a 175 cm tall person has a step length of about 72–73 cm (28–29 inches).

What is the difference between step length and stride length?+

A step is one foot moving forward. A stride is two steps — both feet completing a full cycle. This calculator uses step length (half a stride) so that entering your total step count gives an accurate distance.

Why does gender affect the calculation?+

On average, men tend to have a slightly longer step length relative to height (41.5%) than women (41.3%), based on large-scale pedometer studies. The difference is small but included for accuracy. You can also choose 'Average' to use a gender-neutral multiplier.
