About These Formulas
Disclaimer: Ideal body weight formulas are clinical screening tools, not a diagnosis. They were developed for adult populations and do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. Consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice.
The Ideal Weight Calculator estimates your ideal body weight (IBW) using four clinically recognised formulas — Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983), and Hamwi (1964). Simply enter your height and biological sex to get instant results in kilograms or pounds. Comparing all four formulas gives you a balanced picture rather than relying on any single estimate.
No single formula is universally best. Devine is the most widely used in clinical medicine for drug dosing. Hamwi was designed for diabetes care. Robinson and Miller are refinements with slightly different per-inch increments. Using the average of all four gives a more balanced estimate for general health reference.
All four formulas start from a base weight at exactly 5 feet (60 inches) and add a fixed amount per inch above that. For example, Devine adds 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft for men (starting at 50 kg) and for women (starting at 45.5 kg). The per-inch increment and base weight differ between formulas.
No. IBW formulas were developed from historical population data and do not account for muscle mass, bone density, age, or ethnicity. A muscular athlete may weigh more than their IBW yet still be healthy. Use IBW alongside BMI and body fat percentage for a more complete picture.
These formulas were originally validated for adults at or above 5 feet. The calculator still provides estimates for shorter heights, but accuracy decreases. For heights under 5 ft, results should be interpreted with extra caution and verified with a healthcare professional.
